Drupal vs Joomla chat

Drupal vs Joomla chat

[19:41] Client: hey Randall, we spoke yesterday re: my Drupal / Joomla project.,...
[19:41] rgoya55: yes
[19:41] Client: how's it goin
[19:41] rgoya55: ok
[19:42] Client: cool. so, I'm interested in speaking more, if you're willing. I don't mean to take up much of your time, of course - but was wondering if there is an article or resource i could read that might help me decide between the two systems
[19:42] rgoya55: I sent you a couple of links

The first is from the Drupal site (so it's biased) but makes some cogent arguments for Drupal's superiority over Joomla:

http://drupal.org/node/109428

The other article deals with the unsavory way that Joomla was born from Mambo (some would say "stolen") and I believe in karma, that such an ill-willed start cannot bode well for the future:

http://www.zdnet.com.au/news/software/soa/Open-source-split-of-Mambo-software-begins/0,130061733,139210025,00.htm

And who's to say they won't fork again, further complicating matters?
[19:42] Client: you did? hmm lemme check
[19:43] rgoya55: one was a long analysis of why Drupal is better (from the Drupal forum) and the other was about Joomla's skeevy birth
[19:43] Client: ok looking in my email now -
[19:44] rgoya55: I can resend
[19:44] Client: found it
[19:44] Client: lookin now
[19:44] rgoya55: The Drupal forum thread will take some time to digest
[19:45] Client: ok. i see the thread about joomla's birth is from 2005
[19:45] rgoya55: Yes, that's when the Mambo developers split and created Joomla
[19:45] Client: readin
[19:47] Client: so Mambo is dead?
[19:47] rgoya55: pretty much - it's old hat
[19:47] Client: and Drupal isn't?
[19:48] rgoya55: Drupal is constantly updated - just released v 6.2
[19:48] Client: the question is, what does the future of both systems look likle
[19:48] rgoya55: some modules still haven't been updated, you can install v 5.7 and update later
[19:50] rgoya55: I'm not a fortune teller - I think they will both go on - unless the Joomla developers get antsy again. The Drupal community is generally homogeneous yet diverse and inclusive and supportive
[19:51] Client: ugh, just want to make the right choice / investment
[19:51] rgoya55: There are several "commercial" and semi commercial releases based on Drupal - for my money (free, open source) I like the original
[19:51] Client: what do u mean commercial releases?
[19:51] rgoya55: people developed versions that they sell
[19:52] Client: is that legal in the open source license?>
[19:52] Client: i guess they sell the mods
[19:52] rgoya55: depends
[19:52] rgoya55: mostly, it's all free
[19:52] rgoya55: one big difference is Drupal has taxonomy
[19:53] rgoya55: you can create "virtual" folders, groups etc by tags
[19:53] Client: not really sure what that means, but ok
[19:53] rgoya55: it takes a while to understand
[19:53] Client: yeah, wish i was a programmer, believe me
[19:54] rgoya55: it's not so much a programming thing as a concept for organizing content, members, etc by affinities
[19:55] Client: ah, so this could help me organize my "chapters"
[19:55] rgoya55: yes
[19:55] rgoya55: maybe this will help http://drupal.org/handbook/modules/taxonomy
[19:56] rgoya55: you can have a tree structure with branches
[19:56] Client: makes sense...i think
[19:56] rgoya55: yes, very sensible and powerful
[19:57] Client: have u used Joomla?
[19:57] Client: built any sites in it?
[19:57] rgoya55: not too much, working on a site I think is based on Joomla, finding traces of it, and it's not very sensible
[19:58] Client: ok. so u are heavily biased toward Drupal because it's what you know....this isn't really based on having used both systems extensively and you've arrived at the conclusion that drupal is better because of X Y and Z...
[19:59] rgoya55: I have done several hours of research into both systems and compared
[19:59] Client: ok. well it'
[19:59] Client: its ok with me if u prefer drupal
[19:59] Client: i want someone who really knows the system they work with
[20:00] Client: if it's drupal, and u live and breath drupal, thats great
[20:00] rgoya55: oh, I do WordPress too
[20:00] Client: i hear that's getting bundled into Joomla
[20:01] rgoya55: probably a plug in
[20:01] Client: thats just blog software right
[20:01] rgoya55: yes, good solid blogs
[20:02] Client: k
[20:02] rgoya55: I think Drupal is superior, and not just because I use it
[20:03] Client: i just want to be sure Drupal is not the next Mambo. want to go with the system that has the best chance of being THE standard system. but i guess both are heavily used and there is no easy answer to this.
[20:04] rgoya55: sure - I think you will find success either way. I know some publishers prefer Joomla, probably easier CMS - but not convincing to me to switch
[20:05] Client: yeah that is what i am getting - that joomla might be a little easier to use, but Drupal is more extendable/functional
[20:05] Client: but most of the posts on that thread u sent were nearly a year old, sooo.,.
[20:06] rgoya55: hasn't changed that much
[20:07] rgoya55: check out this Drupal test site, there's probably a Joomla one there too http://opensourcecms.com/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=132
[20:07] Client: Drupal is older yes? perhaps better developed?
[20:07] rgoya55: I think Drupal and Mambo started about the same time
[20:07] Client: ok
[20:10] rgoya55: here's the Joomla demo http://opensourcecms.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2097
[20:10] rgoya55: and there's several dozen other cms's just to confuse you on that site
[20:10] Client: so Drupal and Joomla are not the only options
[20:11] rgoya55: nope - there's ExpressionEngine, phpNUKE and many more
[20:11] Client: oy
[20:11] rgoya55: but Drupal and Joomla are the main communities with many plug ins developed and tested
[20:12] Client: understood
[20:12] rgoya55: try out the two demos, they might help you get a feel for which version you want to drive
[20:13] Client: joomla seems a little sleeker
[20:13] rgoya55: from a programmer's perspective, I think Drupal has cleaner faster code, and is more secure against hacking
[20:13] Client: ok.
[20:13] rgoya55: sleeker or slicker?
[20:13] Client: both?
[20:14] rgoya55: I love Drupal's slogan "community plumbing: always makes me think of a toilet
[20:14] Client: haha
[20:14] Client: well i get that...they consider themselves the plumbing of community. makes sense
[20:14] rgoya55: but it is what it says, you can route the community structure with very fine controls
[20:15] rgoya55: try the demo sites...
[20:15] Client: and u consider yourself a total expert on drupal? u really know it inside and out?
[20:16] Client:
[20:17] rgoya55: I think it's a big universe - I still run up against stuff that doesn't work the way I thought it would, but the support forums are a phenomenal resource for troubleshooting
[20:17] rgoya55: I am talking about very specific behaviors, in general I can make Drupal look and behave the way I want
[20:18] Client: drupal is CSS right? not HTML templates...
[20:18] rgoya55: Drupal is php/mysql - the content nodes text get stored in a database
[20:19] rgoya55: Most themes are xhtml css no tables
[20:19] rgoya55: some still use html tables
[20:19] Client: ok - cuz i want the site to work on mobile devices
[20:19] rgoya55: I often start with the Framework theme which is just that - a very basic frame I can customize
[20:20] Client: k
[20:20] rgoya55: yeah, I think there are some Drupal modules for that
[20:20] Client: alright.
[20:21] Client: well, i shall continue to ponder this and be in touch over the next day or two. i appreciate your patience in the matter....
[20:21] rgoya55: glad to help - make sure you try those two demos, I really think they will help you feel more confident in your chpoice...
[20:21] Client: ok i shall.
[20:21] Client: will be in touch. thanks man
[20:22] rgoya55: have fun
[20:22] Client: heh
[20:22] Client: either will beat vBulletin
[20:22] Client: thats for sure
[20:22] rgoya55: yes
[20:22] Client: vBulletin isn't a CMS
[20:22] Client: though people try to make it into one
[20:22] rgoya55: I like phpBB3 anyway
[20:23] rgoya55: different forum platform
[20:23] Client: gotcha
[20:23] Client: too many choices!
[20:23] Client: anyway ttyl, thanks again
[20:23] rgoya55: ok ttys
