You can still visit the original
netsperience 1.0 - a good example of what can be accomplished with
DHTML and
JavaScript - no
php no
mysql - just client-side programming.
What can I say about a web site where I developed personal projects for
over 10 years?
I moved in sometime in
1996 - long before
Yahoo! bought
GeoCities. Back then, there was a charming interface that displayed virtual "neighborhoods" and you had to browse to locate a "vacant" address. I chose
SiliconValley/Lakes/6131 - and the URL still works
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Lakes/6131/ - I give
Yahoo! credit for preserving the original addresses! My Yahoo! address is
http://www.geocities.com/rgoya/I discovered the internet because my 6 year old daughter enjoyed finding Sailor Moon web sites at the public library.
I saved a web page about
Lou Reed and brought it home to show my wife (she woke up during a blizzard one day and had to buy the entire
Lou Reed/Velvet Underground catalog). Of course, it was just
HTML code without a browser, let alone an internet connection.
I started to learn
HTML - I read some books about web design aesthetics - then I started learning
JavaScript to make the pages more interesting.
My computer was an IBM PS/2 - I think it had a 6MB hard drive and 16KB RAM - the os was Windows 3.1.1 (Windows for WorkGroups). I kept graphics programs etc on 1.44MB floppy discs and loaded them when I needed them.
I remember emailing
GeoCities support about sending them
uuencoded images by email, because the browser at the library didn't support image uploads (
Netscape 1 or
maybe 2). Luckily, the library upgraded in time for me to upload some images.
Here's
one of my first web pages, and even then, I was interested in using
meta http refresh to create a
slideshow of 3 pages ending in my
r?sum?. I have updated resume.htm, so the last page is my current r?sum?.
There are two reasons I have decided to continue the development of
netsperience 2.x here. One is that I am doing more work with
php/mysql, and can't do that at
GeoCities. Also, I have filled up my allotted space of 15MB, so it's a good time to expand:
I'm paying
less than $4.95 per month here, with all the amenities and a lot
more than 25MB!
I have not
paid a cent for web hosting at
GeoCities in over ten years!
That is amazing. Sure, there's ads, and I have had to adapt javascripts several times to minimize the intrusiveness of the ads - but hey,
they pay the rent, right?
